National Student Association Denies Plotting Nationwide Shutdown

In a bold move, the leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has debunked claims of planning a nationwide shutdown of major cities in Nigeria. The association has termed the claims as baseless and aimed at creating unnecessary tension among citizens.

In a statement released by NANS’ Senate President, Akinteye Babatunde, the association maintained that it has not announced nor endorsed any such protest, refuting the reports that suggested otherwise. According to NANS, these reports do not reflect the position or intentions of the organisation.

Instead of disrupting the peace of the nation, NANS is committed to peaceful advocacy and constructive engagement with relevant stakeholders. As the umbrella body representing the interests of Nigerian students, the association has always prioritised peaceful means to address pressing issues.

“We understand the critical importance of maintaining peace and stability in our nation, especially during these challenging times. Any actions that could lead to civil unrest or the disruption of public order are not, and will never be, supported by NANS,” NANS stated.

The association also urged the public, the media, and all stakeholders to disregard the claims, stating that those behind them are faceless entities that aim to destabilise the country. NANS categorically disassociates itself from any plans or intentions to harm the nation.

NANS also called on security agencies to launch a thorough investigation into the origin of this misinformation and to hold those responsible accountable. The use of the NANS name to propagate such dangerous and unfounded claims is seen as a threat to national security and a disservice to the millions of students who genuinely seek positive change through legitimate means.

Furthermore, NANS requested security agencies to act decisively in apprehending individuals or groups attempting to use its name to incite unrest or disrupt the peace of the nation. The association believes that collective effort is needed to ensure the integrity of democratic processes and the rule of law are upheld.

“NANS remains steadfast in its mission to advocate for the rights and welfare of Nigerian students. We will continue to pursue this mission through peaceful, lawful, and constructive channels. Let it be known that NANS stands firmly for peace, progress, and the unity of our nation,” NANS concluded.
