Electricity Vandal Dies in Electrocution Accident in Nigeria

In a tragic incident, a suspected vandal has lost his life after being electrocuted while attempting to steal live wires from a transformer substation in Damaturu, the capital of Nigeria’s Yobe state.

According to Blessing Tunoh, communications officer of the Yola Electricity Distribution Company (YEDC), the incident occurred early Saturday morning when the vandal, whose identity has not been disclosed, entered the substation at Commissioners’ Quarters to steal power assets. The substation was equipped with an exposed live wire, which the vandal attempted to tamper with using his shirt to shield himself.

Unfortunately, contact with the live wire led to the man’s instant electrocution. The police patrol team, codenamed "Operation Haba Maza," was called to the scene and evacuated the body to the Damaturu Teaching Hospital. The deceased’s relatives identified the body on arrival and claimed it.

The investigation revealed that the deceased had attempted to steal the power assets at around 1:00 a.m. The power outage caused by the vandal’s entry into the substation was restored, but unfortunately, it was too late for the man. The transformer was not damaged in the incident, and no further vandalism was reported.

DSP Dungus Abdulkarim, Police Public Relations Officer, Yobe Command, quoted the deceased as saying that the power outage occurred when he entered the substation, and he was suddenly electrocuted when power was restored. The police took immediate action, deploying personnel to evacuate the body, and have pledged to support the YEDC in protecting their installations and prosecuting arrested vandals who damage power infrastructure and disrupt services.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of electricity vandalism and the importance of adhering to safety protocols. It also highlights the dedication of law enforcement agencies and electricity companies to protect power infrastructure and prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.
