The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has urged Nigerians to verify their polling units before the general election. In a meeting with national party leaders in Abuja on Monday, INEC Chairman Professor Mahmood Yakubu noted that feedback from officials and accredited observers after the recent nationwide mock accreditation using the BVAS indicated that some voters struggled to identify their polling units. He therefore advised voters to confirm the exact location of their polling units through a dedicated portal on the INEC website.
To confirm your polling unit via the INEC portal, follow these steps:
1. Log onto the INEC website. The home page displays a menu icon in the top‑right corner.
2. Click the icon to open a drop‑down list with three options: “Check Voter Status,” “Polling Unit Locator,” and “Help.”
3. Select “Polling Unit Locator.” You will be taken to a form that requires your polling‑unit details, including State, Local Government, Registration Area (ward number), and the name of your polling unit.
4. Keep your Permanent Voter Card handy to enter the required information. You can also view your full details using the “Check Voter Status” option, which only needs your Voter Identification Number and surname.
5. After entering the details, click the green “Get Directions” button. This opens Google Maps and provides directions to your polling‑unit location.
INEC advises voters to physically visit their polling unit before election day, as the map directions are only approximate.
