Scholes Shames Six Manchester United Wingers for Lack of Scoring

Manchester United Legend Paul Scholes Blasts Six Players Over Poor Start to 2024-2025 Campaign

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has delivered a scathing assessment of the club’s poor start to the 2024-2025 campaign, singling out six players who he believes need to step up their game. According to Scholes, Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, Joshua Zirkzee, Rasmus Hojlund, and Amad Diallo are not good enough in terms of scoring goals.

Speaking on the Overlap fan debate, Scholes said, “Manchester United are struggling going forward – they are struggling for goals. They have scored five goals and three of them were against Southampton, that probably tells you the forwards [Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Hojlund] just are not good enough.”

Scholes also questioned Erik ten Hag’s decision to leave Marcus Rashford out of the starting lineup, saying, “Leaving Marcus Rashford out on Saturday was a strange one – he’s not scored for such a long time and suddenly, he comes and scores three goals in two games and he’s not playing.”

The former England international also expressed concerns about the lack of a clinical finisher in the team, stating, “Bruno [Fernandes] will score you goals, but they don’t have the centre-forward [that they need]. Amad Diallo is a little bit like Garnacho – he’s a little bit behind him.”

Scholes believes that the team needs a player who can consistently score 25-30 goals per season, saying, “You think of [Rasmus] Højlund last year, again, it’s potential I’m not looking at him thinking, ‘Wow, we’ve got a centre-forward here, 25-30 goals.’ I’m not thinking that. [Joshua] Zirkzee does bring people into play a lot more than Højlund does, but is he that massive goal threat?”

Scholes’ comments come after Manchester United dropped points in their last game against Crystal Palace in the Premier League, playing out a 0-0 draw. The team’s struggles in front of goal have been a major concern, and Scholes’ assessment highlights the need for improvement in this area.
