Idris Elba to Star in TV Adaptation of Chinua Achebe’s ‘Things Fall Apart’

Renowned English Actor Idris Elba to Star as Okonkwo in TV Series Adaptation of Chinua Achebe’s Classic Novel, Things Fall Apart

Award-winning actor Idris Elba is set to portray the iconic character Okonkwo in a new TV series adaptation of Chinua Achebe’s classic novel, Things Fall Apart. The series is being produced by Elba and Gina Carter under their 22Summers production banner, alongside David Oyelowo and Amanda N’Duka through Yoruba Saxon, and Ben Forkner, Dayo Ogunyemi, and Achebe Masterworks.

According to Variety, the adaptation is still in its early stages and has yet to secure a streaming service or network. The official description of the series states that it tells the story of Okonkwo, a fearless African warrior and leader who is resolute about preserving his people and culture. As British colonisers disrupt his world, Okonkwo’s struggle to maintain power and tradition spirals into a heart-wrenching confrontation. His fierce resolve, a fatal flaw in the face of unstoppable change, makes him an unforgettable character, embodying the tension between strength, vulnerability, and adaptability.

Elba is best known for his roles in Thor, The Suicide Squad, Pacific Rim, and Beasts of No Nation, and has earned acclaim for his work in popular TV series like The Wire and Luther. He also portrayed Nelson Mandela in the 2013 biographical film Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.

The novel, published in 1958, has been adapted into several forms of media, including a 1971 movie and a 1987 mini-series, with renowned Nigerian actor Pete Edochie playing Okonkwo in the latter.

Elba’s involvement in the project marks a significant step in bringing Achebe’s iconic novel to the small screen, and fans of the book and the actor are eagerly awaiting further updates on the series’ development.
