Nigeria’s Independence Celebrations Mark Release of 19 Inmates from Ondo State Prisons
As Nigeria marks its 64th Independence on October 1, Ondo State Governor, Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, has ordered the release of 19 inmates serving various prison sentences in the state. The move is part of a broader effort to rehabilitate and reintegrate convicts into society, aligning with the governor’s commitment to decongest correctional facilities and reform the justice system.
The released inmates are part of a larger group of 117 convicts who will benefit from the exercise of the prerogative of mercy. The Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, chaired by Dr Olukayode Ajulo, State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, assessed each application to ensure recommendations adhered to established guidelines and considered factors such as the nature of the offense, length of incarceration, age, health, and behavior of the inmates.
The released inmates will include 19 convicts who will be granted outright release, while others will have their death sentences commuted to life imprisonment. Several inmates will also have their sentences reduced, providing opportunities for reintegration into society and reforming the lives of those affected.
According to Dr Ajulo, the governor’s actions are in accordance with Section 212 (1) (2) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended). The governor’s commitment to decongesting correctional facilities and reforming the justice system is a vital component of ongoing justice sector reforms.
The release of the inmates is a compassionate gesture that underscores the potential for change and redemption within every individual. As Governor Aiyedatiwa’s actions demonstrate, a commitment to rehabilitation and second chances can lead to a more just and equitable society.
The release of the 19 inmates will take effect on October 1, coinciding with Nigeria’s 64th Independence celebrations. This move serves as a reminder of the importance of mercy and second chances in the justice system, and the potential for individuals to reform and reintegrate into society.
