On 13 February 2023, a file photo showed security personnel taking cover as smoke billowed from the Institute Français in Ouagadougou (AFP).

Local inhabitants and a security source reported that nineteen people, including nine volunteers from the armed forces, were killed in two separate attacks in jihadist‑torn Burkina Faso. A senior official with the VDP militia told AFP that seven members of the VDP volunteer force were killed in a mass attack on Thursday in the north‑western village of Dembo. On Sunday, a “terrorist group” killed twelve people, including two VDP members, in Yargatenga, a village near the eastern border with Togo and Ghana, according to local sources.
