The Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, explained why he did not pay a courtesy visit to the Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, during his mega rally in the state on Saturday. While in other states Obi traditionally visited local rulers before launching his campaigns, he began his Lagos itinerary at the Alaba International Market and then proceeded to Tafawa Balewa Square, where a rally was held with many supporters and party faithful in attendance.
The absence of a visit to Oba Akiolu sparked controversy, prompting questions about why the Labour Party standard‑bearer had omitted the traditional ruler. Speaking on Channels Television on Monday evening, Obi said the matter was not a problem. “I have the utmost respect for the Oba of Lagos, as I do for every other traditional ruler. They are highly respected,” he affirmed.
Obi added that this was not an isolated incident. “We wanted to go to the palace, but we were told that he was not readily available to receive us and that we should apply and come another day,” he explained. He said he intends to follow that procedure and emphasized that there is “no issue with that.”
