The Ondo State Chapter of the Labour Party has responded to reports that some of its members and supporters have defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The reaction was delivered at a ceremony in Adegbemile Hall, Akure, the state capital. In a statement, Ondo State Labour Party Chairman Mrs. Remilekun Ojo said the event was attended by “a few dozen people” who claimed to represent the party’s South‑West chapter.
According to the former Labour Party members, they intended to “collapse” the party in the region and merge it into the APC, arguing that the Labour Party could not win elections. Ojo noted that the meeting was chaired by Banji Omotoso, an expelled Labour Party member who previously served as caretaker state chairman in Ekiti State from 2017 to 2019.
The statement emphasized that the Labour Party remains “one and indivisible” across the South‑West and all six geopolitical zones. Under no circumstances will the party consider merging with any other party, “not even the APC, which has brought untold hardship and suffering to the nation,” Ojo added.
Omotoso, described as the “Southwest coordinator,” was dismissed in January 2020 for “gross malfeasance and anti‑party activities.” He no longer has any affiliation with the Labour Party and therefore lacks the authority to speak on its behalf.
