The Central Bank of Nigeria has urged citizens to adopt the eNaira and internet banking as alternatives to the current naira scarcity. This appeal was made by Mr. Osita Nwanusobi, Director of the Corporate Communications Department, who was represented at the 44th Kaduna International Trade Fair by Mr. Mohammed Abbah, Director of Capacity Development.
Mr. Nwanusobi explained that the payment‑system infrastructure can accommodate a growing volume of transactions across all channels. He clarified that the new naira policy is not directed at any individual or group, contrary to public speculation. “The CBN Governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, has always said that the policy is not targeted at anyone or any group of persons; rather, it stems from the Bank’s in‑house analysis to strengthen our macro‑economic fundamentals and improve our socio‑economic conditions,” he said.
Speaking on the theme “Promoting Value Addition for Economic Growth and Development,” he emphasized that value addition is crucial for Nigeria’s economic progress. He noted that the apex bank aims to boost financial inclusion by reducing the unbanked population and to support security agencies in combating banditry and ransom‑taking through this programme. He also linked the “Produce, Add Value and Export” strategy to the export‑led industrialisation policies of Southeast Asia, which propelled the economic rise of the Asian Tigers—Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea, and Taiwan.
