The Nigeria Data Protection Bureau (NDPB) is currently investigating more than 110 companies in Nigeria for alleged data breaches, the National Commissioner, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, announced on Monday in Lagos. The investigation targets a range of sectors, including banks, telecommunications firms, gaming companies, and online lenders.

“We are investigating over 110 data controllers and data processors for various degrees of data privacy and protection breaches. The most worrisome are those in the financial, telecom, gaming, and online lending industries,” Olatunji said.

Commenting on the Bureau’s efforts to safeguard Nigerians’ data in accordance with the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR), the commissioner explained that a lack of due diligence by data controllers when engaging data processors or vendors with access to customers’ personal information often leads to abuse and violations of the NDPR and Section 37 of the 1999 Constitution. He also noted that the Nigeria Police Force is working with the Bureau on this matter.
