Anxiety has gripped many Nigerian Arsenal fans as the league leaders welcome champions Manchester City to the Emirates Stadium for a Premier League title showdown on Wednesday, Sports Extra reports. The Gunners are desperate to avoid a third consecutive league game without a victory, while the Cityzens could dethrone the North Londoners from the summit if they claim maximum points in the capital.
Arsenal’s hopes of lifting their first Premier League title in nearly two decades remain alive, but recent form has been shaky. A 1‑0 defeat at Everton was followed by a 1‑1 draw at home to Brentford on Saturday. Although Arsenal have topped the table since November, their eight‑point lead has been reduced to three after dropping points in three of their last five games. Their unbeaten home run will be tested by the reigning champions today.
The Gunners, who lost 1‑0 away at Manchester City in the FA Cup fourth round last month, have failed to win any of their last 13 Premier League meetings with City and have lost their last ten—a record losing streak against a single opponent in top‑flight history. A defeat to Guardiola’s side would not be catastrophic for Arsenal’s title hopes, with 16 league matches still to play and a game in hand over their rivals. However, a statement victory on Wednesday would provide a major boost for Mikel Arteta’s side as they head into a favorable run of seven successive fixtures against teams outside the so‑called top six.
Speaking ahead of the game, Banjo Adeyosoye, while hopeful of an Arsenal win, expressed doubt about overcoming the visitors: “I will go for a win but won’t be sad if we get a draw as long as we don’t lose the game. It’s been a long time since we beat City in the league; in the second half of last season we almost did, but hopefully we can pull a rabbit out of the hat.” Olawale added, “So we will be facing Erling Haaland again in today’s match? God help us.”
Njoke Steve remains confident regardless of the outcome: “We have a game in hand no matter what the result is; we are still in control of the league.” Another fan, Fred, believes there is a conspiracy against the Gunners: “This is what the FA wants, all pre‑planned to make the league interesting!! So sad.” Jelel Ahmed remarked, “Honestly, it feels almost unfair that a win will put City above Arsenal in the table, even though we all say Arsenal have been electric and City haven’t been themselves. If City win on Wednesday, I think that’s it.”
Biodun Kalejaye said, “It’s going to be an interesting game but knowing Manchester City, they’re probably going to win and that’s so unfair to my darling club.” An optimistic Kenneth Terungwa added, “No one seems to be giving Arsenal a chance here, but we can spring a surprise.”
