Idowu Owohunwa has been appointed the new Commissioner of Police for the Lagos State Police Command, succeeding Abiodun Alabi, who was promoted to Assistant Inspector‑General of Police and placed in charge of Zone 2, headquartered in Lagos. The appointment was confirmed on Tuesday by the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, via a statement on his Twitter account.
Owohunwa, a native of Kabba in Kogi State, began his police career on 15 August 1996 as a Cadet Officer (Course 19/1996) after graduating with a Second Class Upper Division degree from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. He distinguished himself at the Police Academy in Kano, emerging as the Overall Best Graduating Cadet Officer in Professional Studies.
His academic credentials are extensive. Owohunwa was a British Government Chevening Scholar and holds a Diploma in National Security Studies from the Centre for Strategic Studies, Galilee International Management Institute, Kibuss Mizra, Israel, as well as a Certificate in Terrorism Financing Investigation from the London Metropolitan Police. He also earned a Diploma in Cybercrime Studies from the University of Virginia, United States, and is a graduate and associate of the Federal Bureau of Investigation Academy in Quantico, Virginia.
The new commissioner’s posting is part of a broader redeployment of senior police officers across the country. Alongside Owohunwa, CP Frank Mba was transferred to the Ogun State Command. The moves follow Inspector‑General of Police Usman Baba’s February 7 directive to reassign Deputy Inspectors‑General, Assistant Inspectors‑General, and Commissioners of Police to new force departments, commands, and formations, in line with his manpower development policy of “placing round pegs in round holes.”
