Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has warned commercial banks operating in the state against hoarding new naira notes and rejecting the old currency. In a statement signed by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, and obtained in Osogbo on Wednesday, Adeleke lamented the hardship Nigerians are facing due to naira scarcity.
Adeleke decried the non‑acceptance of the old currency and called on banks to act compassionately by either making the new notes available or continuing to accept the old ones. “I am pained by the current hardship inflicted on our people. Daily living has become a nightmare. All sectors of society are witnessing untold hardship,” the statement read. “I call on bank chiefs to have mercy on the poor, the middle class and even the rich.”
He urged that the new naira notes be made available or, at the very least, that the old notes continue to be accepted. “We must stop punishing citizens who have committed no sin. I hereby warn the banks in Osun State to be humane. We should not encourage insurrection against the government through unfair policies and actions,” he added.
Finally, Adeleke demanded that banks in Osun State meet the people’s demand for new notes and reverse any policy that has stopped the acceptance of old notes. “Our people are being pushed to the wall,” he warned.
