Former Senate President Pius Anyim clarified that he was never a member of the G5 governors and affirmed his continued affiliation with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He made these statements in a signed release provided to journalists in Abuja late on Friday.
The G5 governors, known as the Integrity Group, comprise Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom, Abia State Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, Enugu State Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, and their ally, Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike. The group has called for the resignation of the PDP National Chairman, citing concerns about an imbalanced party hierarchy.
Anyim’s comments were prompted by a newspaper article titled “How G5 governors, other PDP leaders stand on presidential choice,” published on 17 February 2023. In his response, he said, “My attention has been drawn to a front‑page story of a newspaper dated 17/02/2023 with the above caption. I want to state upfront that at no time was I part of the G5 governors or leaders of the PDP. I am sufficiently knowledgeable of the events leading to and after the PDP presidential primaries and have my own convictions why I should not, in any way, be part of the G5 governors and leaders.
“I want to state very clearly that after the presidential primaries, I chose to remain in the PDP as a leader and responsible citizen of Nigeria who should indeed place Nigeria above my personal interest. I must confess that this decision was reinforced by my experience working with President Goodluck Jonathan.”
