Arsenal reclaimed the Premier League lead in dramatic fashion when an own‑goal by Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez in stoppage time secured a 4‑2 victory at Villa Park on Saturday. With only minutes left, Mikel Arteta’s side faced the prospect of dropping points in their quest to win the title for the first time since 2004. After falling behind to goals from Ollie Watkins and Philippe Coutinho, Arsenal rallied through Bukayo Saka and Oleksandr Zinchenko to level the score. A draw would have moved them above Manchester City, but the late own‑goal, a deflection of Jorginho’s shot that hit the bar before ricocheting off Martínez, gave the Gunners a crucial three points and placed them three points clear of second‑placed City. Pep Guardiola’s men could regain the top spot on goal difference if they defeat Nottingham Forest later that day.

The win ended a run of three league games and four matches in all competitions without a victory for Arsenal, restoring belief that they can outpace City in the title race. The match featured a memorable moment for Villa fan Tom Hanks, who watched from the stands as Arsenal staged a “Hollywood ending.” Arteta had previously warned that the tight schedule—just 63 hours after the defeat to City—would be challenging, and his concerns were realized early when Villa took the lead after five minutes.

Villa’s early dominance came from a superb lofted pass by Matt Cash to Watkins, who evaded William Saliba and finished into the bottom corner. Arsenal responded in the 16th minute when Ben White’s cross was only partially cleared by Mings, allowing Saka to unleash a powerful strike from 12 yards past Martínez. Coutinho restored Villa’s advantage in the 31st minute, receiving a clever dummy from Emiliano Buendía after Alex Moreno’s run down the right and finishing clinically from inside the area.

Arsenal’s resilience shone after Coutinho’s goal, the first they had conceded this season. Zinchenko equalised in the 61st minute with a blistering shot from the edge of the box, his first for the Gunners since joining from Manchester City. In the closing stages, Leon Bailey nearly secured a win for Villa, his shot rattling the bar after a save by Aaron Ramsdale, but Arsenal held firm.

The climax arrived in stoppage time. Jorginho’s first‑time effort struck the bar, bounced down, and hit Martínez on the head before looping into the net for an own‑goal. Martínez, crestfallen, was again involved when Villa earned a corner; however, Arsenal cleared the ball, and Gabriel Martinelli sprinted half the length of the pitch to slot the ball into an empty net, sealing the win as Arteta and his staff celebrated wildly on the touchline.
