The Supreme Court on Friday affirmed Lawal Adamu Usman as the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) senatorial candidate for Kaduna Central Senatorial District of Kaduna State. In a unanimous decision by a five‑member panel, the apex court dismissed the appeal filed by aggrieved governorship aspirant Usman Ibrahim as unmeritorious. The panel, led by Justice Inyang Okoro, found no reason to overturn the Court of Appeal’s earlier ruling that had also dismissed Ibrahim’s case. Justice Helen Ogunwumiju, delivering the lead judgment, held that the National Working Committee’s decision was correct and could not be faulted.

Earlier, the Abuja division of the Court of Appeal, in a judgment dated 19 December 2022, reinstated Usman as the PDP candidate for the February 25 senatorial elections, voiding a Federal High Court verdict in Kaduna that had nullified the party’s primary election for the district. The trial court had previously invalidated the primary’s outcome and ordered a rerun, which Usman again won. Dissatisfied with Usman’s name being published by INEC, Ibrahim—who had placed second in the May 23 2022 poll—returned to court.
