War: EU leaders meet to counter Russia after deadly attack on Sumy as Zelenskyy invites Trump

Following the Russian attack on Sunday on Sumy, Ukraine, European Union foreign ministers are meeting in Luxembourg on Monday morning to discuss the key challenges facing the bloc and solutions.

The development comes as a Russian attack killed at least 34 and injured more than 100 in Sumy.

To this end, EU leaders are meeting to seek ways to help counter Russian aggression.

Earlier, French President Emmanuel Macron described the latest Russian attack on Sumy as an abuse of human rights and disregard for United States of America President Donald Trump’s diplomatic efforts to end the war.

“Blatant disregard for human lives, international law, and the diplomatic efforts of President Trump,” Macron said.

Similarly, the incoming German chancellor, Friedrich Merz, accused Russia of “serious war crimes” and “perfidy” in the way the attack was conducted. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said the attack represented “the Russian version of a ceasefire.”

However, the US viewed the latest Russian on Ukraine from a different perspective.

Speaking to reporters on Sunday night, President Trump said the attack on Sumy was “terrible” but added he was “told it was a mistake.” He then blamed Joe Biden for the Russian invasion of Ukraine, as he asserted, “This is not my war.”

Trump’s comment comes as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told CBS in an interview that he feared that “Russian narratives are prevailing in the US.

Consequently, Zelenskyy issued a dramatic plea to Trump, asking him to visit Ukraine to see the damage of the war, which escalated in 2022.

He said, “Before any kind of decisions, any kind of forms of negotiations, come to see people, civilians, warriors, hospitals, churches, and children destroyed or dead.”
