China now faces up to 245% tariffs from US – White House

A fact sheet released by the White House on Wednesday indicated that China’s retaliatory actions have landed the country with up to a 245 percent tariff on imports to the United States.

Media Talk Africa reports that prior to the update in the fact sheet, a 145 percent tariff had been imposed on Chinese exports to the US.

President Donald Trump had earlier imposed reciprocal tariffs on several countries across the globe over a trade deficit.

The US President unveiled the “Fair and Reciprocal Plan” on trade to restore fairness in US trade relationships with the affected countries and counter non-reciprocal trade agreements.

He, however, later decided to pause the tariffs for 90 days after many countries initiated talks with his administration for a trade deal.

According to the White House fact sheet, “More than 75 countries have already reached out to discuss new trade deals.

“As a result, the individualised higher tariffs are currently paused amid these discussions, except for China, which retaliated.”
