US Boycotts G20 Events in South Africa Amid Rising Tensions Over Iran China and Israel

US confirms South Africa G20 boycott — RT World News

The United States has announced its decision to boycott upcoming G20 events hosted by South Africa, amid escalating tensions between the two nations. Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed the decision on Tuesday, citing several reasons for the boycott, including South Africa’s alignment with countries such as Iran and China, which the US views as strategic rivals.

The administration of US President Donald Trump has accused South Africa of enabling a racially motivated “genocide,” a claim that President Cyril Ramaphosa has dismissed as a “completely false narrative.” Rubio emphasized that the agenda of the G20 events fails to “reflect the priorities of this administration,” and that South Africa’s consistent unalignment with the US on various issues has led to the boycott. “When one country is consistently unaligned with the United States on issue after issue after issue after issue – now you have to make conclusions about it,” Rubio said.

The US has also criticized South Africa’s stance on Israel, with Rubio describing it as “not just off balance but completely geared towards one side.” This criticism comes after South Africa filed a case at the International Court of Justice accusing Israel of genocide over its military actions in Gaza. The court issued an injunction against Israel in January 2024, which the Israeli government has ignored. The conflict in Gaza was triggered by a deadly incursion led by the Palestinian militant group Hamas in October 2023 and has since escalated into a broader regional crisis.

The boycott announcement comes as President Ramaphosa arrived in Washington to “reset and revitalize bilateral relations” with the US. Ramaphosa is expected to meet President Trump on Wednesday to discuss trade proposals put forward by his government. Despite the tensions, Ramaphosa’s visit aims to improve relations between the two countries, which have been strained in recent months. The US decision to boycott the G20 events hosted by South Africa is a significant development in the evolving diplomatic relationship between the two nations.
