The Tech That Fuels the RBC Brooklyn Half Marathon

The best headphones, watches, and apps for half-marathon runners

Runners Reveal Their Top Tech Picks for the RBC Brooklyn Half Marathon

The RBC Brooklyn Half Marathon, a 13.1-mile course that takes place in May every year, is a thrilling challenge for runners. The race, which features a mix of hills and downhill stretches, requires participants to be prepared with the right technology to track their progress, stay motivated, and recover from the grueling event. Recently, Mashable caught up with several runners, including celebrities and running enthusiasts, to learn about the tech they rely on to train and compete in the RBC Brooklyn Half Marathon.

For many runners, a reliable watch is essential for tracking progress and staying on pace. Alan Bersten, a professional dancer from Dancing with the Stars, opted for a Garmin watch, citing its accuracy and battery life as key factors in his decision. "I saw a bunch of videos on TikTok saying that Apple Watch wasn’t accurate," he explained. Bersten also uses the Runna app, Apple Music, and SHOKZ headphones to enhance his running experience.

Matt James, a seasoned runner and former star of The Bachelor, swears by his Coros global watch, which he uses in conjunction with the Strava app, Endorphins app, and Spotify. "I use my Coros watch at all times, but especially while running," he said. James also relies on Hyperice Normatec recovery boots and JLab headphones to aid in his training and recovery.

Other runners, like Meris Pena, prefer a more low-tech approach. Pena, who works with NYRR Striders, a free walking and fitness program for older adults, doesn’t use headphones while running, instead opting to "feel the love of the community." She does, however, use a Garmin watch and the Stepz app, a low-tech pedometer, to track her progress.

NYRR CEO Rob Simmelkjaer, who didn’t run the half marathon this year but ensures the event’s success, is a fan of Garmin watches, citing their superior battery life. He also uses Bose headphones and Pandora to listen to music while running, appreciating the surprise factor of discovering new songs.

The importance of technology in running is clear, with many participants relying on a range of devices and apps to enhance their performance and recovery. As Patina Miller, a Tony-award winning actor and singer, noted, "I’m obsessed with my Coros products," which include a Global Watch, Coros Pod 2, and Coros heart rate monitor. Miller also uses Strava and recovers with a low-tech roller, Normatec compression gear, and a Theragun massage gun.

Whether you’re a seasoned runner or just starting out, the right technology can make all the difference in your training and performance. As the running community continues to evolve, it’s clear that tech will play an increasingly important role in helping athletes achieve their goals and push their limits.
