The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) reported that the price of a 12.5 kg cylinder of cooking gas increased from N7,413.25 in January 2022 to N10,277.17 in January 2023, a year‑on‑year rise of 38.63 percent. On a month‑to‑month basis, the refill cost rose only slightly, from N10,248.97 in December 2022 to N10,277.17 in January 2023, a 0.28 percent increase.

State‑level analysis showed Benue had the highest average retail price for the 12.5 kg cylinder at N11,260.67, followed by Cross River (N10,833.33) and Ebonyi (N10,763.57). The lowest average price was recorded in Yobe (N9,550.00), with Taraba (N9,845.00) and Gombe (N9,850.00) close behind. This information was part of the NBS “Cooking Gas Price Watch” for January 2023 released in Abuja.

For the 5 kg cylinder, the average price rose from N4,565.56 in December 2022 to N4,588.75 in January 2023, a 0.15 percent increase. Compared with January 2022, the price jumped 25.46 percent, from N3,657.57 to N4,588.75. Kwara recorded the highest average price for the 5 kg cylinder at N4,962.50, followed by Plateau (N4,945.50) and Adamawa (N4,936.67). Enugu had the lowest price at N4,119.23, with Anambra (N4,183.14) and Rivers (N4,210.00) next lowest.

By zone, the North‑Central region posted the highest average retail price for the 5 kg cylinder at N4,859.60, while the North‑West averaged N4,616.66. The South‑East recorded the lowest average price at N4,408.99.

The average retail price per litre of kerosene rose to N1,153.40 in January 2023, up 4.42 percent from N1,104.61 in December 2022. On a year‑on‑year basis, the price surged 163.87 percent from N437.11 in January 2022. State analysis showed Abuja had the highest average price in December 2023 at N1,566.67, followed by Lagos (N1,411.11) and Plateau (N1,383.33). The lowest prices were in Jigawa (N891.67), Edo (N925.93) and Katsina (N935.19). By zone, the South‑West recorded the highest average price per litre at N1,232.15, the South‑East followed at N1,223.95, and the North‑West had the lowest at N1,003.54.

The average retail price per gallon of kerosene in January 2023 was N3,886.11, a 3.54 percent increase from N3,753.38 in December 2022. Compared with January 2022, the price rose 154.20 percent, from N1,528.74.
