A magistrate court has sentenced two individuals to different jail terms for vandalizing property belonging to Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC). This information was disclosed in a statement signed by Babatunde Lasaki, the Head of Corporate Communications & Strategy at EKEDC. The statement revealed that Abdullahi Yinusa and Abdullahi Musa were apprehended for vandalizing cables and a transformer, respectively, before being arrested and charged in court.

Abdullahi Yinusa was caught vandalizing 70mm (approximately 2.76 inches) core electric cables at 38 Akin Adesola Street, Victoria Island. He was detained by the police at Bar Beach Police Station and subsequently arraigned at the Lagos Magisterial District on January 3, 2023. On January 25, 2023, Yinusa was convicted and sentenced to two years of imprisonment for each of the two counts of vandalizing electric cables, with the sentences to run concurrently.

Similarly, Abdullahi Musa was arraigned at the Kirikiri Magistrate Court on February 20, 2023, for stealing a transformer cable and damaging a 500kva transformer belonging to EKEDC. He was tried by E.O. Owumi and sentenced to one year of imprisonment with hard labor, effective from the date of his remand in custody.

Lasaki emphasized that vandalism is a significant factor contributing to poor power supply within EKEDC’s operational network. He assured customers that the electricity distribution company would continue to collaborate with relevant authorities to ensure that offenders are brought to justice and face the full consequences of the law. Additionally, he urged the public to report any suspicious activity around EKEDC’s infrastructure to the nearest office or through the company’s official complaint channels. Lasaki reiterated EKEDC’s commitment to providing quality power supply to its customers and encouraged them to assist in the fight against vandalism.
