The Nigerian male basketball team, D’Tigers, revived their hopes of qualifying for the World Cup by defeating group leaders Ivory Coast in the first game of the last window qualifier held in Luanda. This victory, with a final score of 72-63, ended Ivory Coast’s impressive seven-game unbeaten streak. The Ivoirians had already secured their spot in the World Cup, but the win was crucial for D’Tigers, who had struggled in previous qualifiers. This success boosts their confidence as they aim for qualification for the World Cup, which will take place in Indonesia, Japan, and the Philippines.
Under the leadership of Head Coach Ogoh Odaudu, the home-based D’Tigers started the match with intensity, facing a higher-ranked Ivory Coast team. The first quarter was closely contested, with D’Tigers managing to take a narrow one-point lead. However, Ivory Coast responded strongly in the second quarter, outscoring D’Tigers by five points and taking a four-point lead into halftime.
After the break, D’Tigers adjusted their strategy, finding their shooting rhythm and outscoring Ivory Coast 23-14 in the third quarter. This performance allowed them to establish a five-point lead heading into the final quarter. Both teams intensified their defensive efforts, but D’Tigers executed their game plan effectively, winning the final quarter 17-15 and securing the victory. With this win, D’Tigers moved from fourth to third place in the standings, while Ivory Coast and Angola maintained the first and second positions, respectively.
This impressive victory is particularly noteworthy for Coach Odaudu and his team, which was missing NBA stars such as Jordan Nwora of the Indiana Pacers, Josh Okogie of the Phoenix Suns, and Chimezie Metu of the Sacramento Kings. D’Tigers are now preparing to face Guinea today (Saturday) at 2 PM Nigerian time. In the second round of the qualifiers, the top three teams from each group will be placed in new groups with three other top teams. Group A will be paired with Group C, while Group B will face Group D. All results from the first qualification round will carry over to the second round, with matches in each window played at a single venue.
