The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested Cletus Tyokyar, the Director General of the Peoples Democratic Party Campaign Council. His arrest occurred in the early hours of Saturday, reportedly due to his possession of a sum of money. Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom confirmed the arrest, stating that it took place within the local government area. He criticized the anti-graft agency, labeling it an agent of destabilization and arguing that the amount found on Tyokyar, which was merely N100,000, was insignificant.
“This is a shame,” Ortom expressed. “The EFCC officials arrested our campaign DG because they found just N100,000 on him. EFCC is becoming an agent of destabilization. Why should they pick someone up for such a small amount? Personally, I have more than that.” The governor made these remarks to journalists after casting his vote at his polling unit, R16, located within the Government Science and Technical College in Gbanjimba, the headquarters of the Guma local government area. He noted that the entire council ward had to be relocated to polling units in the area due to insecurity in other parts of the state, with no fewer than 17 polling units established within the college premises.
Ortom also commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the conduct of the election and praised the significant voter turnout in the state. When reached for comment, Bayo Adeniran, the spokesman for the EFCC in the state, stated that the case is currently under investigation. “The case is under investigation, please,” he replied in a text message.
