Hundreds of voters in Aseese, located in the Obafemi Owode Local Government area of Ogun State, have voiced their frustrations regarding the delay in the arrival of officials from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Observations at Ward 2, Polling Unit 019, revealed that residents were expressing concerns that the delay might be intentional, aimed at discouraging people from participating in the voting process. By noon, approximately 276 voters were present at the polling unit, waiting for the officials to arrive.
One aggrieved voter, Lawal Arinola, reported that many individuals had been waiting since 7:30 AM without any sign of INEC officials. Another voter, a middle-aged man who identified himself as Akinmoladun, shared his experience of waiting for over four hours without seeing any party agents or INEC representatives. He remarked, “No polling unit in this area has seen any INEC official. From Maba to Cele 2, down to Powerline, it’s the same situation. Meanwhile, some polling units in Lagos are almost done voting. This is unfair. Will they come now and expect us to finish voting by 2:30? People are eager to vote, which is why they came out in large numbers.”
Oyelakin Lawrence, the community development chairman responsible for distributing numbers to voters as they arrived, explained that the delay was due to logistical issues. He noted, “Previously, we had only 24 polling units in Ibafo, but now we have 47. The same situation applies to other areas in Obafemi Owode. It has been quite challenging to distribute materials to each polling unit. The INEC officials are on their way, and we have sent people to pick them up.”
