President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, witnessed a significant electoral outcome as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, won at his polling unit. Lawan cast his vote at the Katuzu Primary School polling unit 001B in Gashua, Yobe State, on the morning of the election. In this polling unit, Atiku secured 186 votes, while the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, received 107 votes. In the senatorial race, Lawan garnered 114 votes, while the PDP senatorial candidate achieved 219 votes. Additionally, the New Nigeria’s People Party received 11 votes, the African Democratic Congress obtained one vote, and five votes were deemed invalid.

After casting his vote, Lawan expressed confidence in Tinubu’s chances of winning the election. He highlighted the significance of the 2023 polls, attributing this to the amendment of the Electoral Act by the ninth National Assembly, which allowed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to incorporate more technology into the electoral process. Speaking to journalists at his polling unit, Lawan remarked, “Today’s elections are very significant for so many reasons, but one of the major reasons is what the ninth National Assembly has done – to produce an amendment of the Electoral Act that gives INEC sufficient latitude to introduce more technology for the election process.” He noted the efficiency of the new system, stating, “It didn’t take me more than a minute to go through the BVAS accreditation process. It didn’t take me more than a minute to cast my vote. This is very important for our democracy in Nigeria because the process cuts out any tendency for compromise, for fraud, for multiple voting, and so many other things.”

Lawan further emphasized the importance of the electoral process in producing leaders chosen by the voters. He expressed gratitude to the citizens of his Senatorial District for their support, stating, “Let me also at this point, I’m not campaigning, but I want to commend our people, our citizens, especially my Senatorial District. They have shown love, they have shown sacrifice, uncommon love for me particularly, and I cannot thank them enough.” He reflected on his electoral journey, noting that this election would mark his fifth consecutive election to the Senate, and he expressed confidence in winning once again. “Here, the President will win, the Senatorial candidate, that’s me, will win, and the member of the House of Representatives, by the grace of God, will also win,” he asserted.

Looking ahead, the Senate President stated that they would continue to collaborate with the President once Bola Tinubu assumes office. He mentioned, “He will inherit the ninth National Assembly. He will work with us for at least two weeks because our tenure ends on the 11th of June, 2023.”
