Ekiti State Unbundles Power Generation to Increase Energy Access

Ekiti to train 100 youths on installation of electricity prepaid meters

In a bid to boost energy access across the state, the Ekiti State Government has initiated a plan to unbundle its power generation component. This move aims to increase electricity supply to underserved and unserved areas, providing affordable power to consumers. According to Prof. Mobolaji Aluko, the Commissioner for Infrastructure and Public Utilities, most parts of the state lack adequate power supply, with some areas receiving no electricity at all.

To address this issue, the government plans to partner with independent investors to increase electricity generation. This collaboration will enable investors to generate power, utilizing the existing network lines to maximize efficiency. The commissioner emphasized the need for a synergistic approach between the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) and independent investors to achieve adequate power supply.

The Executive Secretary of the Ekiti State Electricity Regulatory Bureau, Samson David, assured investors that the agency would support the partnership, ensuring it yields positive results. He urged BEDC to be open to collaborations, allowing investors to operate on their network lines for energy generation. HRH Odidiomo Afolabi, representing independent investors, encouraged BEDC to explore options that would make their existing network lines useful and active.

Mr. Ademola Agoro of Protogy Global Services highlighted the importance of reliable and accessible energy, noting that unstable electricity hinders education, health, and economic systems. A staff member of BEDC, Mr. Ibukun Ojo, emphasized the need to manage and protect their network, suggesting that a framework is necessary to facilitate increased electricity generation in the state. He stressed that collaboration must be done with a solid framework, without undermining other companies.

The Ekiti State Government’s initiative to unbundle its power generation component is a proactive step towards addressing the state’s energy deficits. By partnering with independent investors and promoting collaboration with BEDC, the government aims to provide affordable and reliable electricity to its citizens, ultimately driving economic growth and improving living standards. As the state moves forward with this plan, it is likely to have a positive impact on the lives of its residents, contributing to a more stable and prosperous future.
