Clarification Issued: Chief of Defence Staff Did Not Blame Victims of Benue Killings
In a recent statement, the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has moved to clarify comments made by the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Christopher Musa, regarding the tragic Benue killings. The DHQ asserts that Gen. Musa never blamed the victims of the attacks, contrary to reports in some sections of the media. This clarification comes after certain media outlets misrepresented Gen. Musa’s comments, suggesting that he had laid blame on the victims.
According to Brig.-Gen. Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Information, Gen. Musa’s remarks were actually aimed at highlighting the complexities of conflict zones and the need for communities to be vigilant and cooperative with security agencies. Gusau emphasized that the CDS’s comments were made in good faith, with the intention of encouraging communities to work together with security agencies to prevent such attacks and promote peace and stability in the region.
The DHQ’s statement was prompted by a news article published in a national daily, which misinterpreted Gen. Musa’s comments on the Yelwata incident. The National Coalition Against Mass Killings and Impunity (NCAMKI) also reportedly took the CDS’s comments out of context, leading to a misleading narrative. Gusau categorically stated that Gen. Musa did not intend to blame victims or justify the heinous acts perpetrated by criminal elements in Benue State or elsewhere.
Gusau expressed regret that advocacy groups would attempt to politicize an issue as sensitive as national security, and emphasized that Gen. Musa has consistently demonstrated a deep commitment to protecting all Nigerians, regardless of ethnicity, religion, or gender. The CDS has continued to work tirelessly to ensure the safety of citizens, promote civil-military cooperation, and uphold the values of professionalism, compassion, and integrity in military operations.
The DHQ rejected the insinuation that Gen. Musa’s remarks were "reckless, insensitive, or provocative," stating that such claims are untrue and undermine the efforts of the armed forces in managing volatile security situations. The Defence Headquarters remains committed to working with all communities, civil society organizations, and government partners to ensure justice, peace, and accountability prevail across Nigeria.
In conclusion, the Defence Headquarters’ clarification serves as a reminder of the importance of accurate reporting and responsible communication, particularly in sensitive matters of national security. As Nigeria continues to navigate complex security challenges, it is essential that stakeholders engage constructively and verify facts to avoid exacerbating tensions or diminishing public trust in institutions.
