Stray Subway Kitten Goes Viral Then Gets Adopted

NYC Subway Stray Finds Fame and Forever Home in Viral Rescue

A lost kitten wandering onto a New York City subway sparked worldwide concern and surprise, ultimately leading to a heartwarming adoption thanks to a viral TikTok video. The tiny feline, seemingly a stray, boarded at the 110th Street Station with an uncanny resemblance to a regular commuter. Footage capturing the moment quickly spread online.

Shaquantae McGee, posting under the username @Pocahontae, filmed the scene as the kitten navigated the train and was carefully scooped up by a compassionate passenger. McGee, recounting the event to local station 6ABC, described the atmosphere: “The woman got off at the next stop with the cat. Everyone was in shock and panic.” The video swiftly gained immense traction, accumulating approximately eight million views on the social media platform.

The woman seen rescuing the kitten, identified as Betsaida Mercado, later revealed the astonishing outcome. Speaking with The Today Show, Mercado confirmed she had taken the kitten home and officially adopted her. She honored her new companion’s serendipitous journey by naming the cat Emmie, in tribute to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), which oversees the subway system.

Mercado shared the happy news via TikTok, stitching an update onto the original viral clip. “I’ve never had a cat before, but she is so precious, I love her,” she expressed. Her social media page now documents Emmie’s transition, showcasing the flood of gifts she received, her introduction to a canine sibling, and recent veterinary visits. The episode, which began with confusion aboard a crowded subway, has concluded with security and adoration, propelling the once-lost kitten into the spotlight as a beloved pet and internet celebrity.
