The Independent National Electoral Commission has declared Aminu Iya-Abbas, the Speaker of the Adamawa State House of Assembly, as the winner of the Adamawa Central Senatorial District seat in the recent presidential and National Assembly elections. Contesting under the banner of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Abbas secured 145,880 votes, defeating his closest rival, Abdulaziz Nyako of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who garnered 118,555 votes.

Abdulaziz Nyako, the son of former Governor Murtala Nyako, was previously elected to the Senate in 2015 on the APC platform. He played a significant role in the establishment of the North East Development Commission but chose not to seek re-election to the Senate. Instead, he aimed to unseat Governor Jibrilla Bindow of the APC, running under the African Democratic Congress.

Prior to the election, projections indicated that Abbas would win the Adamawa Central Senatorial District contest. Early results from five out of the seven councils in the district showed the PDP candidate leading Nyako by a margin exceeding 30,000 votes. When the final results were announced, Dr. Ahmed Alkali, the returning officer from Modibbo Adama University in Yola, confirmed Abbas as the winner with 145,880 lawful votes cast.

A detailed breakdown of the votes by local government, as announced at the collation center in Yola North, revealed the following: in Fufore LGA, the PDP received 19,138 votes while the APC received 17,569; in Hong LGA, the PDP garnered 25,535 votes compared to the APC’s 16,515; in Girei LGA, the APC received 10,205 votes while the PDP had 16,201; in Gombi LGA, the PDP polled 18,105 votes against the APC’s 12,912; in Yola South LGA, the APC received 21,620 votes while the PDP garnered 23,483; in Song LGA, the APC had 14,284 votes compared to the PDP’s 18,877; and finally, in Yola North LGA, the PDP received 24,542 votes while the APC had 25,450 votes.
