Members of the Nigeria Association of Government Medical and Dental Practitioners at the General Hospital in Ilorin, Kwara State, have launched a two‑day strike after an alleged assault on one of their colleagues. Dr. Ola Ahmed, the state chairman of the Nigeria Medical Association, told the News Agency of Nigeria that the doctors felt forced to stop work because their safety was continually threatened. “After an emergency congress, the doctors unanimously agreed that no doctor will work in the hospital for 48 hours. We are tired of being a punching bag for the public,” he said.

Dr. Ahmed explained that the incident involved a sergeant from the Police Mobile Force who attacked a doctor in the hospital. The assault took place at about 5 p.m. on Sunday in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, where the sergeant had brought his ill wife for treatment. After the doctor performed the necessary tests, the patient was discharged. The sergeant then returned to the hospital and assaulted the doctor, claiming the examination had been done without his consent and that it violated a cultural taboo. Dr. Ahmed stressed that the woman was an adult and that a colleague was present during the examination.
