Peter Obi Pledges Four-Year Term to Curb Nigeria’s Corruption from the Top

Peter Obi, Nigeria’s 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, has asserted that combating corruption in the country is more achievable than widely assumed, urging leaders and citizens to prioritize personal accountability. Speaking at a youth-focused leadership event hosted by Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) in Bauchi on Friday, the former governor emphasized that simple ethical choices could slash corruption rates dramatically. “If you, your spouse, and children refrain from theft, you’ve curbed corruption by 60%,” he told students, framing the issue as a collective responsibility rather than an insurmountable challenge.

Drawing from his career, Obi highlighted his tenure as a bank chairman, a period when—he claimed—peer executives frequently abused loans for personal gain. “Examine any institution I led. You won’t find loans granted to me or funds unaccounted for,” he asserted. Similarly, he defended his eight-year governance of Anambra State, challenging critics to identify any mismanagement of state resources. “Not one kobo [Nigeria’s smallest currency unit] I wasn’t entitled to has been traced to me,” he said, positioning transparency as a cornerstone of his public service.

Reiterating his political ambitions, Obi pledged to seek only a single four-year term if elected president in 2027, rejecting prolonged tenures he believes foster complacency. “Four years are sufficient to instill civility, enact laws, and ignite systemic reforms,” he argued, addressing skepticism about short-term efficacy. His remarks come amid persistent public frustration over Nigeria’s corruption rankings and governance challenges, with critics often citing mismanagement of oil wealth and institutional graft as barriers to development.

Obi’s focus on youth engagement reflects broader discourses in Nigeria, where over 60% of the population is under 25, underscoring demands for accountability from leaders. While his proposals echo past anti-corruption campaigns, his emphasis on personal integrity and time-bound leadership presents a distinct narrative in a nation awaiting tangible progress.
