Tragedy Strikes in Nigeria: Bandits Kill 13 in Mosque Attack
A devastating attack on a mosque in Nigeria’s Katsina State has left 13 people dead, after bandits opened fire on worshipers during morning prayer on Tuesday. The incident occurred in Unguwan Mantau, a community in Malumfashi Local Government, and was confirmed by the Katsina State Government.
According to Dr. Nasir Muazu, Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, the attack was a reprisal for the community’s successful defense efforts against the bandits two days prior. The community had decided to lay an ambush against the bandits, killing many of them, which led to the retaliatory attack on the mosque.
“The Muslim members of the community were praying in the mosque during the Fajr prayer when the criminal element started shooting sporadically in the mosque,” Dr. Muazu said. He also revealed that the attack was carried out by “criminal elements” who “launched a reprisal attack on the community.”
In response to the tragic incident, security agencies have been deployed to the area to restore normalcy. The Air component commander of the Forward Operating Base, Nigerian Army, and Nigerian Police Force have been deployed to clear out the bandits. Dr. Muazu stated that the state government is working towards bringing the bandits to book and ensuring safety across communities.
The state government has also extended heartfelt condolences to the families affected by the attack. Dr. Muazu praised the gallantry of the people of Unguwar Mantau, who have been committed to fighting the bandits and ensuring safety in their community.
This incident is a stark reminder of the ongoing security challenges faced by communities in Nigeria, particularly in the northern regions. The Katsina State Government has reaffirmed its support for community-based security initiatives, which have been instrumental in the fight against banditry and other forms of crime.
As the rainy season approaches, Dr. Muazu warned that bandits often hide under crops to perpetrate their “evil acts”. The state government is working to eliminate these criminal elements and ensure the safety of its citizens.
The international community has been called upon to condemn this senseless act of violence and to support the Nigerian government in its efforts to combat terrorism and banditry. The people of Unguwar Mantau and the entire Katsina State are in dire need of support and solidarity during this difficult time.
