The Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, has expressed his gratitude to the people of the state for their demonstration of unity, courage, and resilience during the 2023 presidential and National Assembly elections. He praised the citizens for their peaceful and orderly conduct throughout the electoral process, emphasizing that their actions reflect a strong commitment to the ideals of democracy and the rule of law. Bello also acknowledged the efforts of security agencies and electoral officials, commending them for their dedication to ensuring a transparent and peaceful electoral environment.
In his remarks, Bello stated, “I am happy to commend the citizens of Kogi State, security agencies, and electoral officials of our nation for their commitment to a peaceful electoral process. The orderly and peaceful manner in which the elections were conducted is a testament to the strength of our democracy and the resilience of our people across the state.” He further highlighted that the successful completion of the elections indicates the citizens’ dedication to democratic principles and the rule of law. He expressed gratitude for the security agencies’ efforts in safeguarding the citizens before and during the elections.
Bello also congratulated the electorate for their overwhelming support for the candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) during the elections, interpreting this commitment as a clear indication that the citizens stand firmly by the ruling party in the state. According to the results announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the APC’s presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, secured a total of 240,751 votes, defeating his closest rival, Atiku Abubakar, who garnered 145,104 votes. Additionally, INEC declared the three senatorial candidates of the APC as winners of their respective elections.
Senator Isah Jibrin Echecho of Kogi East received 108,777 votes, surpassing his closest rival, Victor Adoji of the PDP, who received 81,662 votes. In Kogi West, Engr. Abubakar Ohere won with 52,132 votes against Natasha Akpoti Uduagha of the PDP, who scored 51,763 votes. Hon. Sunday Karimi of Kogi West also emerged victorious with 70,184 votes, defeating Hon. T.J. Yusuf of the PDP, who polled 51,964 votes. The APC further secured six out of nine Federal House of Representatives seats, although two Federal Constituency elections were declared inconclusive by INEC.
In closing, Bello thanked the people for their support and urged them to be magnanimous in victory as they celebrate. He assured them that Asiwaju’s victory would bring about a revolution in Kogi’s industrial sector and revitalize the struggling iron and steel industry in Ajaokuta. He emphasized that the citizens have fulfilled their roles in the electoral process, which will enable them to hold their elected representatives accountable.
