The Edo State chapter of the Labour Party has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of two voters during last Saturday’s elections, emphasizing the urgent need to discourage and eliminate electoral violence. The victims were Festus Idahosa, 33, and Elizabeth Owie, a 43-year-old mother of three. At the home of the deceased, the state chairman of the party, Kelly Igbaloi, paid tribute to Elizabeth, describing her as a gallant lady who embodied the ideals of the party. He extended his condolences to the family and assured them that the Labour Party would provide support during this difficult time.
Igbaloi lamented, “It is a loss of a gallant lady. Her death is regrettable. If it were possible, we would have brought her back to life. We grieve as a party and we commiserate with the family; we are not here on this condolence visit to score a cheap political point.” He further stated, “Idahosa shouldn’t have been killed for simply exercising his right to vote and help decide the future of the country. The LP will do its best to ensure that the families are supported and not left alone in their grief.”
Edo South senator-elect Neda Imasuen also spoke about the unfortunate deaths, calling them tragic and preventable. He remarked, “This should not have happened to anyone performing their civic duty. We will stay in touch with the families and provide them with the necessary support.” He emphasized the need for authorities to take decisive action against electoral violence, stating, “We cannot afford to lose responsible citizens due to the actions of thugs.” The families of the deceased expressed their gratitude to the Labour Party chairman, senator-elect, and other party executives for their support during this challenging time.
