The management of Guaranty Trust Bank has refuted claims that it provided N500 million in new notes to the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, on the eve of the presidential and national assembly elections. The bank has urged its customers to disregard this unsubstantiated allegation entirely. A Twitter user, @ifygold21, had previously posted that the bank made this transaction on February 24, 2022, at the order of President Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd).

In a statement shared on its social media platforms, the bank categorically denied the report, labeling the post as both uninformed and malicious. The statement clarified that the managing director of Guaranty Trust Bank is Miriam Olusanya, not Segun Agbaje, as incorrectly stated by the post’s sponsor. The bank emphasized, “The attention of Guaranty Trust Bank Ltd (the ‘Bank’) has been drawn to a spurious post on Twitter by @ifygold21 alleging that the Bank gave the new Naira notes in the total sum of ₦500 million to one of the leading presidential candidates in the ongoing General Elections on the eve of the elections and at the order of a high-ranking Government official. The Bank wishes to refute this claim in its entirety and state categorically that it is completely false and is designed to bring the image of the Bank and its officers to disrepute.”

Furthermore, Guaranty Trust Bank indicated that preliminary findings suggested the post was made using a faceless bot account, likely operated by an unscrupulous individual intent on spreading falsehoods and inciting well-meaning Nigerians for malicious purposes. The bank described this attack as unwarranted, posing a serious threat to its operations and potentially endangering lives and property.

In response to the situation, the bank has escalated the matter to relevant parties, including Twitter, to identify the owner of the fake account and pursue legal action. Guaranty Trust Bank reaffirmed its commitment to serving a diverse customer base with various business interests across Nigeria. The bank also reiterated its dedication to being a responsible, non-partisan corporate citizen, adhering to the highest standards of global best practices and sound corporate governance in all aspects of its operations.
