BPE to list two Discos, GenCo in NGX, privatise 91 FG assets

The Nigerian government has announced plans to list two electricity distribution companies and one generation company on the Nigerian Exchange Limited. The move, aimed at attracting investment to the sector, was disclosed by Ayodeji Gbeleyi, Director General of the Bureau of Public Enterprise, during a press briefing in Abuja. Gbeleyi also revealed that the agency is working on privatizing 91 government enterprises as part of a broader strategy to restructure and commercialize public assets, improve efficiency, and boost competitiveness.

The 91 enterprises slated for privatization or commercialization span several sectors, including oil and gas, agriculture, aviation, and other public services. Specifically, 16 enterprises operate in oil and gas—among them refineries—12 are in agriculture, 20 belong to aviation, and an additional 28 are classified as other public enterprises. Gbeleyi emphasized that the drive to privatize these entities is motivated by the need to attract investment and enhance performance, though he did not disclose the names of the companies to be listed on the exchange or the timeline for the privatization process.

The planned privatization is expected to have significant implications for Nigeria’s economy, potentially leading to increased investment, job creation, and economic growth. The Bureau of Public Enterprise will likely play a crucial role in overseeing the process and ensuring it is conducted transparently and efficiently. As the government moves forward with these initiatives, monitoring their progress and impact will be essential. The success of the reforms will depend on the government’s ability to create a favorable business environment, attract investment, and guarantee that the privatization process remains fair and transparent.
