The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Cross River State announced that the faction loyal to Minister of Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike will not produce the next state chairman. The decision was taken by the party’s Cross River South Senatorial District during a caucus meeting in Calabar on Wednesday.
Mr. Asuquo Ekpo, the state’s PDP vice‑chairman, said the meeting was convened to discuss pressing political developments affecting both the senatorial district and the state at large. The party condemned a resolution passed by the Wike‑aligned faction in Abuja, which called for extending the tenure of the incumbent state chairman. The Venatius Ikem‑led state executive has been criticised for being riddled with conflict and divisive tendencies.
The caucus reaffirmed its commitment to an all‑inclusive, rancor‑free state congress scheduled for 27 September. It adopted the existing state party offices allocated to the southern senatorial district, in line with the national template and the resolution of the Cross River special stakeholders meeting. The group resolved to present a united front at the forthcoming congress, recalling the party’s loss in the South in 2023.
The caucus directed all local government areas in the district to consult widely and nominate their most competent representatives for the September 27 congress. It also pledged to engage with different local governments to accommodate or realign zoning as circumstances may require.
The caucus commended National Woman Leader Mrs. Amina Bryhm for her bold, decisive steps to ensure PDP stability in the state, viewing the move as a significant step toward unity and cohesion ahead of the congress. With the state congress set for later this month, the party is preparing to elect new leaders and chart a new course, and the outcome is expected to have major implications for the PDP’s prospects in Cross River State.
