The Peoples Democratic Party’s national convention has been defended by its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, who asserted that the process adhered to the party’s constitution and guidelines despite protests from FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and his supporters. Speaking on Arise Television on Wednesday, Ologunagba emphasized that the party is guided by its rules, laws, and internal guidelines, and that its organs had already made the necessary decisions.
He noted that everyone has the right to receive notice of meetings, including those claiming to be part of the National Executive Committee, and explained that the party followed established procedures to ensure all stakeholders were informed and included. In response to claims that the process excluded certain stakeholders, Ologunagba clarified that all parties, including alleged NEC members, had access to the meeting notice. He rejected suggestions that Wike’s demands could disrupt the convention, calling such claims untrue.
The defense of the convention comes after Wike and his supporters expressed dissatisfaction with the process. Ologunagba’s statement aims to reassure party members and the public that the convention was conducted fairly and in accordance with party rules. Party leadership maintains that the convention was a success, with all necessary procedures followed.
The controversy highlights ongoing debates within the PDP as it prepares for future elections. The party’s ability to navigate internal conflicts while adhering to its guidelines will be crucial. Leadership must balance the demands of various stakeholders while ensuring that rules and procedures are respected. With the convention now concluded, the PDP will focus on moving forward and preparing for upcoming elections.
