Nigerian lawmaker Abdulmumin Jibrin Kofa has officially announced his departure from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) after being expelled by the party’s Kwankwasiyya loyalist faction. Kofa, who represents the Kiru/Bebeji Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, described his removal as a “rude shock” in a statement released on Saturday.
The expulsion followed comments Kofa made during a television interview that the NNPP deemed anti‑party. Kofa defended his remarks, insisting they did not constitute anti‑party activity and were consistent with the party’s principle of allowing dissenting views. He also expressed disappointment at not being given an opportunity to defend himself before the decision was taken.
Kofa denied allegations that he had failed to pay party dues, stating he was willing to settle any outstanding obligations and asking the NNPP to provide an invoice. Despite the expulsion, he thanked supporters for their backing during his time with the party and called for civility as both sides part ways.
Previously, Kofa served as Director‑General of the Tinubu support groups before joining the NNPP in 2022. He announced that he will consult widely before deciding on his next political move. His departure marks a significant development in Nigeria’s political landscape, highlighting ongoing tensions and power struggles within the NNPP. As Kofa charts his next steps, observers will watch how his exit affects both the party’s dynamics and his own political future.
