2027: Former Minister Shittu seeks Oyo governorship

Adebayo Shittu, a former Minister of Communications and a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, has announced his intention to run in the 2027 governorship election in Oyo State. He made the declaration during an exclusive interview on a current‑affairs program, emphasizing his extensive experience, resources, and vision for the state.

Shittu’s political career spans more than four decades. He was first elected to the old Oyo House of Assembly at the age of 26 in 1979. He later served as Commissioner for Information, Culture, and Home Affairs, and subsequently as Attorney‑General and Commissioner for Justice in Oyo State. His most recent national role was as Minister of Communications from 2015 to 2019 under former President Muhammadu Buhari.

In the interview, Shittu said he is ready to transform Oyo State and has a clear idea of what he wants to achieve in government. He claimed to be the only candidate with a manifesto outlining his plans and highlighted the need for rotational leadership. According to him, the Oke‑Ogun region—despite having ten local governments—has been marginalized in the state’s power structure. While the Ibadan region has produced six governors in the past thirty to forty years and Ogbomosho has also had a governor, Oke‑Ogun has never produced one. “Enough is enough for Ibadan,” he said, calling for a change.

Addressing concerns about his age, the 72‑year‑old elder statesman asserted that age is just a number and that he remains as strong and dynamic as anyone his age. His declaration sets the stage for the 2027 governorship race in Oyo State. As the election approaches, the electorate’s response to Shittu’s candidacy will become clearer, and his extensive experience and articulated vision could make him a strong contender, though the final outcome will depend on campaign strategies and voter preferences.
