‘I was robbed’ — Terry G slams Billboard over Afrobeats list

Nigerian music veteran Terry G has reaffirmed his commitment to his craft, stating that he has no plans to retire from the industry. The 39‑year‑old Afrobeats star, whose real name is Gabriel Oche Amanyi, made this declaration in response to criticism that he was trying to revive his career through social media.

Terry G took to his X handle to address his detractors, writing that he is comfortable being perceived as an up‑and‑coming artist because it allows him to continue creating music without the pressure of being labeled a legend. He emphasized that legends are often associated with retired artists, and since he has no intention of retiring, he is willing to be seen as an emerging talent.

His music career spans over a decade, during which he pioneered the “Street‑hop” genre—a style that originated in the ghettos of Nigeria. Hit songs such as “Free Madness,” “Sangalo,” “Akpako Master,” and “Run Mad” were hugely popular in the 2010s and helped establish him as a major force in the Nigerian music scene.

Currently, Terry G is attempting to revitalize his career with a collaboration with Victony titled “Tanko.” This move is seen as an effort to reintroduce himself to a new generation of fans and to prove that he still has relevance in the ever‑evolving music industry. His determination to keep making music testifies to his passion and dedication.

As the Nigerian music industry continues to grow and evolve, it will be interesting to see how Terry G’s career unfolds and whether he can regain his position as a leading figure in the Afrobeats genre. With his persistent attitude and creative output, he is likely to remain a notable figure in the music world for years to come.
