Benue State Governor Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, together with Minister of Works Engr. Dave Umahi, launched the construction of a multi‑lane flyover at the Wurukum Roundabout in Makurdi on Saturday. The project began after the demolition of the Food Basket monument, a prominent landmark that was removed to make way for the new infrastructure.
The flyover is intended to ease traffic congestion, boost economic activity and improve the aesthetics of the state capital. Governor Alia expressed confidence that the partnership with the Federal Ministry of Works will ensure timely completion and deliver lasting economic benefits to Benue residents. Minister Umahi reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to modernising the nation’s road network, noting that the Wurukum project aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s agenda to strengthen transport infrastructure and promote nationwide development.
The removal of the Food Basket monument was deemed essential by the state government to facilitate the construction. As the flyover progresses, it is expected to create jobs, stimulate growth and enhance the overall quality of life for both residents and visitors. The collaboration between state and federal authorities underscores a shared commitment to delivering critical infrastructure that benefits the local community.
Upon completion, the Wurukum Roundabout is projected to become a model for efficient traffic management, reflecting the governments’ broader effort to modernise and develop the region’s transportation network.
