The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has clarified that Dumebi Kachikwu, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, is no longer a member and therefore has no authority to influence the party’s leadership composition. National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi made the statement while speaking to journalists in Abuja on Saturday.
The clarification follows Kachikwu’s criticism of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for recognizing David Mark as the ADC’s national chairman. Kachikwu described INEC’s decision as irresponsible and said he never had confidence in its current leadership.
Abdullahi emphasized that being a former presidential candidate does not give Kachikwu ownership of, or a permanent say in, the party’s direction. He noted that Kachikwu was granted the party’s ticket for a specific election, but this does not entitle him to an ongoing role in decision‑making. The ADC spokesman also condemned Kachikwu’s divisive rhetoric, including his reference to the party’s leadership as “old people.”
Abdullahi acknowledged that the party is aware of forces seeking to destabilize opposition groups, including the ADC coalition. By clarifying Kachikwu’s status and role, the ADC aims to establish a clear understanding of its leadership and composition as it navigates internal dynamics and interactions with electoral bodies, remaining focused on its goals and objectives. This development highlights the complexities of party politics in Nigeria and the need for clear communication and defined roles within political organizations.
