The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) reported a sharp rise in passenger refunds, totaling N257.2 million between January and August 2025. This figure more than doubles the N108.3 million refunded during the same period in 2024 and far exceeds the N32.8 million recorded in 2023. Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection Michael Achimugu attributed the surge to the regulator’s proactive engagement with airlines and its efforts to educate travelers about their rights. The NCAA’s consumer‑protection framework has encouraged greater compliance by airlines, even amid industry operational challenges.
Hotel accommodation refunds have also increased, reaching N6.08 million by July 2025, according to verified reports from hotels in major cities such as Abuja, Asaba, and Lagos. These refunds are governed by the NCAA’s regulations, particularly Part 19, which outlines consumer‑protection standards for the aviation sector.
Achimugu highlighted that the growth in passenger refunds is one of the Authority’s most significant achievements in its 25‑year history, underscoring its commitment to safeguarding air travelers’ rights. The NCAA has pledged to continue protecting passengers, ensuring fair treatment and appropriate compensation when needed. As the aviation industry evolves, the Authority’s role in enforcing regulations and educating the public will remain vital, promoting high‑level consumer protection that benefits both travelers and the sector as a whole.
