We fear many ICU patients will die - AKTH to KEDCO over disconnection

Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital in Kano, Nigeria, has been disconnected from the power supply by the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) because of outstanding electricity bills. The hospital’s management warned that this disconnection could lead to further loss of lives, especially among patients who depend on critical life‑support equipment. According to the administration, the outage has already caused the deaths of some patients in intensive care.

The hospital regularly pays its electricity bills from internally generated revenue and allocates part of that revenue to purchase diesel for on‑site generators, which supplement KEDCO’s supply. In a statement, the hospital’s Head of Information Unit, Hauwa Inuwa Dutse, said that the facility has been working to settle its arrears with KEDCO. The management has appealed to the utility to restore power, emphasizing that uninterrupted electricity is essential for delivering healthcare services.

Efforts to obtain a comment from KEDCO’s management have been unsuccessful; the company’s spokesperson, Bala Sani, did not respond to calls. The loss of power has serious implications for patient care, and the hospital’s administration continues to seek a resolution to prevent additional fatalities. This situation underscores the broader challenges Nigerian healthcare facilities face in maintaining reliable access to essential services such as electricity. As the hospital negotiates with KEDCO, concerns for patient well‑being remain high, highlighting the critical role of dependable infrastructure in supporting life‑saving medical care.
