Felix Nmecha sparks outrage for Charlie Kirk tribute

Borussia Dortmund has initiated an internal review of midfielder Felix Nmecha’s social media activity following his expression of condolences to the family of murdered American conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Nmecha posted a black-and-white photo of Kirk on his Instagram stories with a caption that read “Rest in peace with the Lord,” which drew largely negative reactions online.

The footballer subsequently changed the caption to focus on Kirk’s family, stating that celebrating the murder of a husband and father of two who peacefully stood up for his beliefs and values is “really evil” and highlights the need for Jesus Christ. Nmecha also responded to online criticism, emphasizing that expressing condolences is a humane act that should not be condemned. He noted that while he disagreed with Kirk on some issues, having different political positions is acceptable.

According to German sports news outlet SID, the club will review Nmecha’s posts and engage in a dialogue with the player, with no plans for punishment at this time. However, German tabloid Bild reported that Nmecha’s contract includes an “Instagram clause” that could result in millions of dollars in penalties for social media posts that violate the club’s values.

The incident has drawn attention from US-based billionaire Elon Musk, who reposted a call for Borussia’s representatives to be barred from traveling to the US for the 2026 FIFA World Cup if they “continue to persecute” Nmecha. Charlie Kirk, 31, was killed while addressing students at a college in Orem, Utah, prompting widespread online reactions, including many people openly cheering his assassination. US President Donald Trump has vowed to pursue not only Kirk’s murderer but also what he termed the “radical left” networks that fuel political violence.

The internal review by Borussia Dortmund highlights the complexities of balancing free speech with social media responsibilities, particularly for public figures like athletes. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the club will address Nmecha’s social media activity and whether it will impact his future with the team.
