Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris dismissed a petition filed by former Attorney General of the Federation Abubakar Malami, calling it a smear campaign designed to discredit his administration. Speaking to a delegation of civil‑society organizations at the Government House in Birnin Kebbi, Idris described the petition as “frivolous” and “false,” noting that security agencies are already investigating the allegations.
Malami’s petition, dated 10 September 2025 and addressed to senior security officials, alleged that the Kebbi State government was importing mercenaries and political thugs to destabilise the state. It further claimed that certain political actors were collaborating with foreign mercenaries from the Niger Republic and arming them through illegal channels, describing the situation as a “national security emergency” that threatens Nigeria’s sovereignty and internal security. The Kebbi State Assembly has since dismissed the petition, while security agencies continue their probe.
Idris emphasized that his administration has invested heavily in security to restore normalcy in affected areas and has been at the forefront of the fight against crime in the North. He also responded to the recent arrest of a social‑media influencer who criticised Kebbi’s healthcare system, accusing the opposition of sponsoring negative reports to deter investors. Idris asserted that, despite such attempts, his efforts to attract investment to the state have been successful.
Unperturbed by the opposition’s tactics, the governor said he will remain focused on implementing projects that benefit Kebbi communities. The episode underscores the ongoing political tensions in the state, as the governor and the opposition trade accusations. As the investigation proceeds, the people of Kebbi await the outcome and its implications for the state’s security and political landscape.
