A prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Tonye Cole, has voiced concerns about the situation of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, who was recently suspended by President Bola Tinubu. Cole warned that even if Fubara’s suspension is lifted, his authority as governor will remain limited. Speaking on a television program, he said Fubara will face significant challenges in making decisions without external interference and stressed that Rivers State, a crucial part of Nigeria, deserves a governor with full authority to lead.
Cole, a former governorship candidate in the 2023 elections, noted that the people of Rivers State and Nigeria as a whole will be affected by this situation. He explained that Nigerian politics often involves outgoing governors handing over power to their preferred successors, a practice that can create conflicts between old and new administrations. Such conflicts, he argued, hinder democracy and negatively impact the populace.
To address the impasse, Cole advised Fubara to negotiate with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, in order to reach a mutually acceptable agreement that would allow the governor to make certain decisions independently. The controversy in Rivers State has raised concerns about the balance of power and the ability of elected officials to govern effectively. As the state awaits the outcome of Fubara’s suspension, Cole’s comments underscore the need for a resolution that enables the governor to exercise his authority and act in the best interest of the people. The development carries significant implications for both the state and the country, and its resolution remains to be seen.
